These are some of the many questions provoked by the visually arresting work “Birdy,” performed by Taiwanese dance company Hung Dance at NYU Skirball Center for the Performing Arts. Presented over a mid-July weekend as part of the 35th anniversary celebration of the Taipei Cultural Center in New York, the work spotlighted many issues that contemporary Asian artists wrestle with as they search for their own expression within societies steeped in rich legacies of traditional arts.
