World-class review of ballet and dance.
It’s a drag to report that I had the urge to walk out of my first performance back in NYC after a long summer break. So much for feeling refreshed. The culprit was the Boston Ballet’s rendition of Akram Kahn’s “Vertical Road (Reimagined) 2023,” which closed the second program of New York City Center’s annual Fall for Dance Festival. Yet, happily, I can also announce the addition of a promising new voice to the choreographic scene: that of Robbie Fairchild, the ballet and Broadway star. Programming disparity is the perennial gamble of Fall for Dance, now in its 23rd year. The wide-ranging and affordably priced festival allows artists and companies to take risks—which means that some riskiness naturally trickles into the audience experience too.
