Like Eve with the apple, the story of Pandora’s box hinges on a clear divide—the ideal before and the sullied after. There’s no such lucidity in this hour-long work from Aszure Barton, which funnels its sharpness and precision into its dancing and keeps its storytelling hazier. The ballet was one of Tamara Rojo’s earliest commissions when she took up San Francisco Ballet’s artistic director post in 2023 and loosely parlays the Pandora myth into a musing on the possibilities and perils of AI. Barton is one leg of a creative tripod here that also includes composer Sam Shepherd (in other circles known as the DJ Floating Points) and multimedia studio Hamill Industries, both of whose contributions are so attention-commanding, so done to the nth degree, they could easily support their own standalone installations.
